Large Bowl #1

Already sold – if you would like something similar, give me a shout and I’ll get busy!

This gorgeous coffee table bowl, was a commission for a friend, so it’s already gone – sorry!  It’s the first time I’ve layered the glazes in this particular order, and I was afraid it wasn’t going to work – but you don’t know until you try!  And, wow, I’m glad I tried!  The interplay between the tow glazes on the rim is just superb, and really sets this piece off.

If you’re interested in something similar, just give me a shout and I’ll get back on the wheel!

The piece is glazed in Blue Mist, one of my favourite glazes!  In the extreme heat of the kiln, this glaze flows as it melts, creating streaks, rivulets and flow lines.  Where it flows away, leaving only a thin layer it becomes transparent.  Where it’s thick, it’s a stunning baby blue with a mottling and occasional dark blue streaks in the colour that encourages you to look closer.  Where one layer flows over another it leaves a gorgeous tan tide line.  Can you tell it’s one of my favourites?!?!

The rim was then dipped in Mussel Shoals glaze, a beautiful semi-gloss white glaze with cream/translucent flecks.  These flecks are what gives the glaze it’s name as they are made by incorporating locally collect mussel shells, ground up and mixed into the glaze formula that I developed from scratch.  I know it sounds silly, but the glaze has a very textural ‘softness’ to it which I just adore and I hope you do too.
