The Clay

All ceramics start off life as soft, squidgy mud.  This needs to be conditioned first by kneading like bread dough, a process called wedging.  This wedging gets rid of air bubbles, makes the clay uniform and also removes the clay’s ‘memory’.  Clay is a bit unique in that it ‘remembers’ the shape it used to be and wants to return to it until it is wedged.

Throwing the form

Yes, Yes…I know…the scene from Ghost.  Well…yeah, it’s a bit like that!  The clay spins on the potters wheel and runs through my fingers, which pull and shape the clay into the final form.  In reality, it’s actually a bit of a negotiation between me and the clay – I have an idea of what I want it to be but often it tells me that it wants to be something different!  I find I’m most successful when I listen to the clay and work with it.  It’s not some weirdo new-age thing, it’s more me learning this craft in a kinda laid back way.
