Wild Wales

70% Foraged and 100% Gorgeous!

I’ve got to say – this is my favourite glaze!  It gets it’s name from the fact that it is made mostly from ‘wild’ foraged ingredients from Wales.  The main components of this glaze are:

  • Granite – foraged from the beaches and abandoned quarry in Trefor on the Llyn Peninsula
  • Quartz foraged from various beaches in Wales
  • Mussel shells foraged from various beaches in Wales and also Red Rocks beach in Holylake (well it’s only across the water from Wales!!!)

It does of course have some commercial ingredients, for example copper and cobalt oxides, but I have really tried to minimize these to produce my most naturally sourced glaze yet.

The the results…well they speak for themselves!  Wonderful olive greens, rich blues and earthy browns combine to form an almost peacock feather like display.  Similar to many of my glazes, this one flows in the heat of the kiln and this creates lovely rivulets of colour and causes the colours to separate in the most wonderful patterns.  Of course this also means that every piece is completely unique!
